The Celtic people in Britain had a festival called Samhain, on 31st October. Children go round and say trick or treat. Some people give treat to the child and some people says trick and go in in the house again.
For them, this was the end of the summer. They built bonfires on the top of hills, to make evil spirits go away.
The were nervous about walking in the dark because they were afraid of evil spirits. So they dressed up as witches or ghosts, to scare the spirits away.

They thought dead relatives and friends could then come back to visit them, often in the form of blacks cats. Alls Souls Day to be on 13th May. But in 837, Pope Gregory IV moved it to 2nd November.
